During the Napoleonic wars the standard British infantry regiment was commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel or Major and comprised a Headquarters and up to 10 infantry companies. Most of the troops served in the centre companies but each regiment also included a flank company of grenadiers and flank company of light troops. The average strength of a regiment at Waterloo was 640 all ranks. Centre company soldiers were armed with the "Brown Bess" musket and bayonet. They generally fought in a line of two ranks with the front rank kneeling and the read rank standing. This allowed all troops to fire simultaneously thus creating the devastating effect referred to as "volley fire." Due to the time it took to load and prime a musket when attacking and closing with enemy the British soldier relied primarily on the bayonet, a stout heart and not a little luck. At the battle of Waterloo the majority of the Allied army, commanded by the Duke of Wellington, was comprised of infantry regiments. It was the infantry that bore the brunt of the battle and suffered most of the casualties. Wellington fought a defensive battle that involved his infantry either fighting in line when confronting French infantry or forming squares to repel the French cavalry.
