The flank companies of the British infantry regiments comprised the light company and the grenadier company, and the troops that served in these units were normally the best men in the regiment.
Originally the "grenadier" was the name given to soldier who carried grenades when assaulting enemy positions. They were usually the biggest and bravest soldiers of the regiment and always led an attack on the enemy. During the Napoleonic wars British regiments were generally comprised of up to 10 companies of soldiers commanded by a Captain. Each regiment would field a grenadier company on the far right as a way of protecting its flank from an enemy attack.
The light company was made up of smaller men who were selected for their fieldcraft and shooting ability. The light company was always positioned on the far left of a regiment deployed in line. Often the light company was thrown forward of the main body of a regiment to act as a skirmish line. The skirmishers role was to harry the enemy with well aimed musket fire, often targeting the officers and NCO's of an enemy formation.
